ANOTHER 5 NIL DEFEAT!

Here is Rookies report of last night`s match.
**************************************************************
1.RAY DEVENNEY         0-1       GABOR HORVATH
2.SAM FLANAGAN         0-1      CALUM LEITCH
3.BRUCE MACLEAN      0-1       ROSS HARRIS
4.JOHN BRYARS             0-1       FRED MACDONALD
5.WILLIAM STOREY      0-1       SAM MOORE

After 2 encouraging results against Ballynafeigh 2 and Muldoon’s 1, we fell down to earth with an almighty bump last night against a team we previously beat 5.5-1.5 !

It was a case of “the moore, the merrier” for Sam on Board 5 as William “The Conqueror” failed to live up to his nickname!

Gabor was “hungary” for victory against Ray, who made a “clerical” error to lose the game!

On Board 3, Sam as vice-captain was forced to put a nought in the results “calum” after his defeat!

‘Fred to say John on Board 4 was unable to draw with MacDonald, as he had done before, as the latter withstood deep time trouble to clinch a win!

I was expecting a “loss from Ross” in the last game but he came up, smelling of “rosses” to complete the whitewash!

Oh well, as the song goes, “the only way is up” and at least The A Team gets a long Christmas break to recharge their batteries.

In the meantime, if Siebren, Stephen and Graeme are ready, willing and able to start playing again for us in the New Year, I’d be very happy to hear from you!

Don’t forget the Christmas Quiz and social evening at the club on Monday, 22/12/14 at 8pm-if I don’t see you there, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year !

EXCITING DRAW AT MULDOONS

Muldoons A versus Belfast South A chess match ended in a draw. My game with Des Moreland ended in a very exciting draw, we were both running out of time.

I was black, it is black to move. Whenever you fail to play the most promising continuation, you end up with a draw instead of a win.

Match report is below.
***************************************************
N.PILKIEWICZ              1-0                 R.DEVENNEY
D.MORELAND           0.5-0.5              S.FLANAGAN
 S.WOOD                     0.5-0.5             B.MACLEAN
D.MALLAGHAN        0.5-0.5             J.BRYANS
J.WOOD                 0-1                  B.JAFFA

After losing 6-1 to Muldoon’s last time, we played above our rankings to draw this match.

First, Ray got into a “pickle” against  Pilkiewicz  in the opening and fell for a brilliant Rook sac against his Bishop.

Then, Las Vegas bound Danny “neve- ad- a” chance and saw his luck “desert” him against John, who had an outstanding draw.(Nevada-get it?). So, I’ll not be send a “Dear John” letter to John after this game.

The next game saw Bruce “spruce” up his technique to draw with Stephen, who was in massive time trouble.

On bottom board, John couldn’t see the “woods” for the trees, as Bernie “The Bolt” landed his “golden shot” to win the game.

At 2-2, the final result rested on Board 2, with both players in time trouble,  where Des in a “daze” could no “more land” the final blow than his opponent, even though Sam went a rook up. But they agreed a draw before either flag  fell to tie the match.

3-2 AFTER A TOUGH MATCH

Belfast South beat Ballynafeigh second team after a very tough and long match.

White has just played Kh4. It is black to move, is it possible for black to win or draw?

It is not so simple if you have very little time left on the clock.

Rookies match report is below.

RAY DEVENNEY   1-0        DAMIEN CUNNINGHAM
SAM FLANAGAN   1-0       JOHN O’DOHERTY
BRUCE MacLEAN  0-1       THOMAS DONALDSON
JOHN BRYARS        0-1       IAN WOODFIELD
DAVID REUBEN     1-0       PAUL ANDERSON

*********************************************
The A team is never more dangerous than when it’s hurting from the previous match and out for revenge against the Ballynafeigh behemoth, whose first team beat us 7-0 last week.

No-one, not even Paul Anderson, was “robbing Ruben” of his victory but that “pauls” into insignificance after what followed on the higher boards.

Ian “would field” a strong counter-attack against John ,caught in the “bryars” of a complicated position which he eventually lost.

While Captain Kelly was across the road watching Liverpool throw away a win , he heard the “tomtoms” sending a message that Bruce had lost to young Tom, leaving The A Team on the brink of defeat.

Kelly arrived back in time to see a “ray” of sunshine, as Ray won on Board One against Damien, a “cunning ham” if ever I saw one.

At 2-2, Sam was offered a draw by the other John but he said: “If it’s all the “sam” to you, I’ll play on a pawn down” and his bravery was rewarded by a late win to seal a match victory!

THE SAINT MICKEY MOUSE DAY`S MASSACRE

Disaster struck tonight at Ballynafeigh. South Belfast totally whitewashed and massacred!
Here is my game against Soren. The game score is not correct, it was a win for white.

Play chess online

Here is Rookie`s match report.

The A Team captain was heard saying “Houston, we have a problem” when losing three players before the game. When Ray lost to David on top board, the Ballynafeigh 1 captain said “Houston, we have lift off”!

Soren “Kid” Jensen was “soaring” after his win over Sam, who was “sore an’ “dejected after his defeat!

Board 3 saw Stephen “rush” to victory in his “David and Goliath” game, where Goliath (i.e. Stephen) turned the tables on David!

On Board 4, “jammy Jamison” just edged a win over dejected John, who had given his all !

The last game to finish, with seconds to go, involved Damien play 2..f5 against Martin’s Vienna Opening. It was a happy “omen for Damien” that Martin had not seen that line before, The first nine moves took nearly two hours to complete but “ D. Lavery’s delivery” was just that bit more rapid than Martin’s, whose flag fell (or was it mate?-answers on a postcard to….).

Overall, we salute the prospective League One Champions (on this form), but I’ve checked with my lawyer (no, not Michael Watters) and only we can call ourselves “The A Team”

As the Latin phrase goes, “per ardua ad astra” (through adversity to the stars)!

BANGOR RESULT

Tonight`s match against Bangor was a 4-1 win for South Belfast.

         RAY DEVENNEY           0.5-0.5                   PAUL MCLAUGHLIN
         SAM FLANAGAN            1-0                       WALTER WILSON
BRUCE Mac LEAN         0.5-0.5                   GARY JOHNSTON
         JOHN BRYARS                 1-0                       OWEN WILSON

         DAVID RUBEN                 1-0                       MICHAEL SHEERIN

ROOKIE`S REPORT IS BELOW

In the first game to finish, young Michael was not “sheerin” after his game with David, who found it as easy as “sheerin” sheep-Michael could not pull the “wool” over his eyes.

Then, Ray’s advantage in the opening “pauled” into insignificance at the end, resulting in an agreed draw.

Owen was “owing” his Bangor colleagues an explanation after he lost his opposite coloured Bishops ending to John.

Next, ”Walter Wilson wilted when wrung” out to dry by Sam.

In the last game, Gary defied the odds by drawing a tricky Knight and pawn ending, where neither side could risk moving their Kings from the centre of the board.

So, it was a case of: “ It’s good knight from him and it’d good knight from me” !

I think I heard the opposing team drive off afterwards in a couple of old “bangors”, but I may have got that wrong!

LATEST LEAGUE RESULT 27/10/2014

Tonight`s match between Fruithill and BS ended in a draw.
I am waiting for Rookies match report.

***********************************************
1.A.DELANEY 0.5-0.5 R.DEVENNEY
2.C.MARRON 0-1 S.FLANAGAN
3.F.CARRUTHERS 1-0 B.MacLEAN
4.G.COLLINS 1-0 D.RUBEN
5.J.MONAGHAN 0-1 J.BRYARS
TOTAL 2.5-2.5

Favourites The A Team were almost “bowled” over at Falls Bowling Club. Fruithill were not as “green” as their ratings implied but were unable to “crown” their achievements with outright victory.

They certainly displayed an optimistic “I’m alright, Jack” attitude throughout the match!

Board One failed to “de-liver De-laney or De-venney de-cisive
de-nts in their de-fences”, ending in a draw.

To be “frank”, Carruthers won a piece early on and “bruised” Bruce’s ego

Ciaran was “marron” his team’s chances of victory by losing to Sam.

Collins proved he was not “Gerry-atric” in beating David.

Finally, Captain Monaghan’s chances of clinching a match victory went down the “toilet” in the battle of the 2 “Johns”.

COPYRIGHT INFORMATION

This is not directly related to Chess, however it may be useful for anyone who makes Chess videos.

Earlier this week I was contacted by the BBC, they wanted permission to broadcast the video of a very young Carl Frampton sparring in the Midland Boxing Club. The video is below.

From this morning sole Copyright of this video belongs to CRAIG FRAMPTON who is Carl`s wiser and more handsome brother.

Craig is like me, he does not willingly get his photograph taken and he does not post pictures of himself on the internet.

The only known images of Craig are in the video below where he can be seen standing on the rubble which was once my house and he is asking me, "If I am going to the boxing club." He appears at about 25 seconds on the timeline.

So if any big broadcasting companies want to publicly show the Carl Frampton sparring video, they must get permission from Craig, if they can locate him!

Just shows you, you never know who is watching your videos?
If anyone has Chess videos, they may find it useful to copyright them just in case some big broadcasting company wants to use them for broadcast purposes.

TONIGHT`S RESULT

South Belfast A team beat Lindores by 3.5 to 1.5.

A report by ROOKIE should be available tomorrow. The man himself is pointed out in this video.

Rookie`s report is below.
*****************************************************************************
                                      G.HORVATH                         1-0             R.DEVENNEY
                                     C.LEITCH                                0-1             S.FLANAGAN
                                     R.HARRIS                              0-1              B.MacLEAN
                                     F.MacDONALD                0.5-0.5         J.BRYARS
                                    S.KEERS                                  0-1             D.RUBEN

An amazing result against a stronger team on paper!
Gabor found a strong pawn move in the opening, bur Ray fought back valiantly until a late oversight saw Ray “fray” at the edges.
Bruce was able to “harass” Harris and force Ross to a “loss”.
I remember Fred as a junior But I’m “afred” “old MacDonald’s form” only allowed him to draw with John.
“Sam’s your man” after he followed up his Isle of “Man”  Major victory last week with a win over Calum.
So, it all boiled down to the bottom board, where Keers was in “teers”-it’s a “shame” Shane’s defeat lost Lindores the match.
But The A Team proved their name is not a misnomer!!

Incidentally the secret of communicating knowledge by preaching and writing were set out thousands of years ago by Solomon himself.
He gave all the principles of effective communication in Ecc 12:9-11.
There is no one alive today who is wiser than Solomon nor will there ever be, not even Magnus Carlsen or Fabiano Caraunna.

Ecc 12:9 And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs.
10 The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth.
11 The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd.

WHO COULD POSSIBLY RESURRECT THE NYT CHESS COLUMN?

An article has appeared about the New York Times Chess column. It seems it is about to be de-commissioned.
Is there anyone who could resurrect this Chess column?

There is only one columnist who could take on this monumental task. It is the legendary "ROOKIE."
Here is his latest report on a local league match.

The Civil Service team toasted their drinks to the late, great Alan Burns before the start of the match.
Robert’s early defeat “caused a crisis, but crucially Critchlow’s critical faculties crunched out a comfortable point”!
Geoff scrambled a draw against William-but that’s another “Storey”!
“Chris crossed” swords with David, ending in a drawn endgame!
It came down to the last game, where John “wheeled” out the big guns against Mark and felt like a “Newman” after his devastating win!

A WORD OF THANKS

I would to express my thanks to the organisers and sponsors of the recent Isle of Man Chess tournament.
It was very enjoyable and well run.

I would also particularly like to thank local Isle of Man players for their very warm and friendly welcome.

Of course I must also congratulate Nigel Short on his marvellous victory.

FINAL VIDEO FROM IOM MASTERS AND YOUR CHANCE TO WIN £1,000,000

This is the final video clip of the IOM Masters and it is also your chance to win a cool 1 million sterling in used banknotes!
All you have to do is solve a puzzle. The puzzle comes in two parts, an easy part and a hard part.
For the easy part all you have to do is identify the mysterious beautiful female at the end of this video clip. Once you do that you can then start the hard part.

When you can answer who the beatiful female is, you then send the answer to Gerry Adams MI5 handler. When you send the correct answer to Gerry`s handler, he or she will then send you a cool £1,000,000 in used Northen Bank notes as a reward!

Obviously the hard part is locating Gerry Adam`s MI5 handler!

To get you started, I will give you a clue to the identity of the mysterious beautiful female in the video. Her name may or may not be Abigail.

NOT WHAT IT SEEMED

This is a crucial position from my game today. I am black and it is me to move. At the time I thought it seemed like an easy win, plus I was well ahead on time!

However, I could only manage to agree a draw after quite a few more moves.
Had to change the picture the first position I posted was inaccurate. Looks like I missed a win. Too bad!

I had to use Danny King`s brain today but it still was not enough to get me a win.

ISLE OF MAN VIDEO CLIP 1

Managed to catch a video clip of former UCU player Keith Allan on Saturday when I went to register for the Major tournament.

Have a few more video clips from the last two days, though it takes time to upload them with my Hotel internet connection.

The tournaments are taking place in a very impressive venue but I have experienced 2 minor problems taking videos.

Yesterday the room was so warm my camera would not focus properly, plus the wooden floor creaks a lot so I do  not like to walk about too much, especially at the end of the evening when only a few competitors are still playing.

The organisers have a very good website and Facebook page.

Fisherwick is going to organise big tournament like this!  Michael will make sure Peter funds it and there is NO CONFLICT OF INTEREST.

TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE?

Am I the only one who suspects that "cheating" at the highest levels of chess is much more widespread than people are willing to publicly admit?

I do remember reading one of Rogoff`s articles lately, where he implied quite a high level of cheating was indicated in the German league chess, according to the parameters which Rogoff has constructed.

Is Fabiano Caruana just too good to be true?

A LOST OPPORTUNITY

I see local MSM are now starting to make inquiries about just how much money "Local government" has put into Carl Frampton`s title fight project.

Like I revealed here a few weeks ago, the whole idea of staging the fight down in the Titanic Quarter was Peter Punt`s idea.

He is willing to shell out large sums of money just to be associated with any big, spectacular, successful venture of ANY KIND.

Local chess missed a big opportunity for mega funding when it failed to establish a new World Chess Organistion.

There is lots of free property available down in the Titanic Quarter for office space as well!

It could have been called Titanic Chess Federation.

CLASSIC CHESS QUOTE

Just saw what must be one of the classic chess quotes of all time by Maurice Ashley.
"Yes, chess is cerebral, but it can also make you rich.”
So, how many people will be made rich by playing chess over the next 5 years?

How many people have ever left Las Vegas having been made rich?

Las Vegas was set up by rather nasty people with the intention of  fleecing the gullible.

GREAT, MUST BUY THIS

I have been waiting for this to come out.  Must buy it soon.  It is interesting the way the word "Wicked" is used in modern language.

Already have a very good book on this by Cyrus Lakdawala. He is a very amusing writer.

UCU RESULTS, REPORT AND PICTURES

Reports of the 2014 Ulster Championships are now on the UCU site and the Lindores site. Some nice pictures as well.

Below is Gabor Horvath who is now the Ulster Champion. He is Hungarian but as he has lived in N.Irleland for more than one year he qualifies to play in the tournament.

My friend Norman won the Intermediate section. Norman has the biggest private collection of  chess books in the country. He does not get time to read them as he is to busy saving Harland and Wolff from bankruptcy.

Here is a nice picture of all the prizewinners.

Congratulations to all the prizewinners. I hope all the competitors enjoyed the tournament.

PASSION KILLER INDEED?

Following on from the last post containing the "Sicilian Passion Killer."  Here is a rated game I played against Fritz earlier today.

As you can see it really does play the line from the video as white.
I doubled on move 30 and it resigned. I took the easy way out because I was getting tired, at the time I was not quite sure of the best way to continue. The game setting was one hour for each side.

BRILLIANT TITLE FOR A BRILLIANT VIDEO

Here is a video with a brilliant title. "Sicilian Passion Killer."
In my experience with Fritz 13 this line as white is often played when I am playing it using the "Rated Games" feature.

So this is a useful video for me.

INNOVATIVE IDEA

I have an idea, I must put it to the UCU.  Why don`t we start a new world chess organisation in N.Ireland?
We could call it The REAL FIDE? or The CONTINUITY FIDE? or  The PROVISIONAL FIDE or The RED HAND FIDE?

From what I can gather, Peter Robinson would be happy to shell out a couple of million to ANYONE who can bring him ANYTHING that can be turned into good news.

The opportunity will not last long as Peter is expected to be leaving soon.

Things are so bad for him he did not even get any credit for the brainwave of staging Carl Frampton`s world title fight at the Titanic slipways. It looks like Barry McGuigan is sort of getting the credit for the idea.

Apparently it genuinely was Peter`s idea for the Titanic showdown, it is odd he has never made it public in order to get the credit? Whenever a politician looses the knack of making sure he gets the credit for a great idea, you can be sure he is finished.

ULSTER CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Ulster Championships are schedule to take place on the August Bank Holiday Weekend August 23rd, 24th and 25th 2014 at prestigious Europa Hotel. We look forward to seeing you there!

The Europa Hotel is used for many big events. Below is a video clip of Carl Frampton announcing his last fight at a press conference in the Europa.

Carl is a nice guy, he has always been very likeable from his childhood days. I was providentially fortunate enough to catch Carl on video when he was very young as I happened to train at the Midland Boxing Club at that time

One of the big features of Carl`s fights is the question of what music will he choose for his entrance to the ring? The last time he chose a Jackie Wilson song.

The video clip reminds of the time chess colleague Danny Mallaghan and myself went over to the arena, Danny walked straight in with no problem. I could not get in because I had brought the wrong ticket!
Had to go all the way back home and get the right ticket once I got over the shock of refused entry!

THE BEST EVER TIME?

This must be the best ever time to have an interest in Chess. The resources for news, training, social play, etc are just incredible.

Even for people like me who happen to awake at all the odd hours of the day there is almost endless opportunities for Chess information.
Just look at Danny King`s Twitter feed for example?

This is just a couple of the videos I have watched in the last 40 minutes or so.
I don`t have a Twitter account by the way, it was suspended  because it was  used for "Targeted Abuse." lol lol lol

Danny King has a brilliant personality for interviewing people, he should have his own TV show. He is much better than that slimy Stephen Nolan, I am sure he has a lot less "skeleton`s in the cupboard" than Nolan as well!

Video One. Hilarious were she says she "was always butting her nose into everyone`s business!" 1.01 on the timeline.
It is a very dangerous pastime in N.Ireland to "butt your nose into everyone`s business!" lol lol

Video Two. Garry Kasparov. I am presently in the process of watching this one.

ENDGAME TRAINING

I have been in a very bad sleeping pattern over the last few weeks which makes it impossible to play chess at normal hours.  Seem to be coming out of it now, so I hope to get playing again.

In the meantime I have purchased this endgame training setup from Peshka, it has been very useful BUT it has one big drawback, it is quite addictive.  It may not be to everyone`s taste but I have to say it is the most useful endgame instruction I have come across.

Ecc 12:12And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh.
